Ideas, not tribes, are the key, and what leaders choose to do and say drives what people think and how they vote.

I don't see it that way.

Rosebriar's suggestion seems more plausible; people's self-identification could just fail to reflect their underlying beliefs. But I guess my point is that most underlying beliefs are themselves just not very important; tribe trumps ideas for most voters.Noah Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09093917601641588575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17232051.post-75804418294582314582011-01-02T11:42:52.308-05:002011-01-02T11:42:52.308-05:00Actually I was going to ask a similar cause v. eff...Actually I was going to ask a similar cause v. effect question. Do you think it's possible that there is an equally (or much closer to equally) strong liberal base, but *because* liberals are more apologetic about our beliefs, they're just unwilling to identify themselves as liberal when asked?rosebriarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02229537505859471832noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17232051.post-45791074189284285032011-01-01T14:02:03.383-05:002011-01-01T14:02:03.383-05:00"Conservatives are less apologetic about thei..."Conservatives are less apologetic about their beliefs because conservative beliefs have a stronger base of support."

Or, do conservative beliefs have a stronger base of support because conservatives are less apologetic about their beliefs?Fatboyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13777120295384956611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17232051.post-82612115425709040472010-12-31T14:15:54.178-05:002010-12-31T14:15:54.178-05:00And my answer to that is that most Republican init...And my answer to that is that most Republican initiatives are about changing the status quo, from that deregulation to banning abortion, etc.Noah Smithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09093917601641588575noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17232051.post-89510764744996911022010-12-31T13:23:26.581-05:002010-12-31T13:23:26.581-05:00My answer is even simpler: a challenge to the stat...My answer is even simpler: a challenge to the status quo requires a robust defense of why that change is necessary, whereas doing things as they have always been done requires little justification at all.A.K.
